Oct. 3 - Wenatchee

Continuing on along Route 2, we soon found our way to Wenatchee, WA.  Gone were the thick forests, giving way to prairie and farms,...

 then rocky and rugged hillsides,...

and then a river.  A BIG river.  The Columbia River!  It was a cloudy day when we arrived - yes, we're definitely getting closer to the coast!!

 Reflections along the river.

Our home for the next few days:  the Wenatchee Confluence State Park.  This is a very popular spot, with only a few sites that would work for our rig (they have some weird elements like curbs at the back of the site, which make it hard to reach their hook-ups for long RVs), and most of them were already taken - even early in the day on a weekday!  But we lucked out and found one - the last one.  I couldn't help but give the stink-eye to some little teeny truck campers who had taken one of the larger sites that would've worked so much better for us!!  They had plenty of other smaller sites that would've been fine for them!  Oh well, what can you do?!

We could see why this park was so popular - pretty, spacious sites surrounded by trees and green lawn - and the river right there within easy walking distance.  Here's an early morning shot.  I went to this spot at night once, using my flashlight to hunt for critters that a sign had claimed might be spotted.  I never did see any of the otters I was hoping for, but I did get the wonderful sight of a beaver swimming about!!  And there were tons of tracks in the mud shore, if you could get there in time, before they were swept clean daily by the river's fluctuations.

And when it was too rainy/cold to go out?
(yes, the notorious cloudy wet of the Pacific NW setting in...!!!  And this is basically the theme of the whole rest of this trip!)

I know, I know.  How many pictures of cats in cat beds can one endure?!  Lots I hope, since you're getting to see lots here!

 Mmm-hmmm...

And look at these two strange characters out walking!

Taking a stroll around the park.

Tractor eyeballs a tree while fellow campers eyeball him!

RVing allows you to find all sorts of hidden treasures, but sometimes they are so hidden that you only find them as you pass through them enroute to another destination!  This was the case with Leavenworth, WA.  We were leaving Wenatchee, on our way over Steven's Pass to the coast and the Anacortes/Burlington area. And then, what the...?!!  Wow, what pretty trees!  Look at all this fall foliage!  And there were all these cute, painted, muraled shops and hotels.  We'd never heard of this place - otherwise it would have been a stop for sure!  I do hope someday to get back there, and if you're ever "in the area," be sure to check it out (http://www.leavenworth.org/modules/pages/index.php?pageid=1)!

And back into the dense forests...!

Other than Jasper, this was our first sighting of real fall colors (mostly just plants growing in disturbed, cut areas of the forest).  But there were zero places for an RV to pull over along this road!  So only drive-by shootings...alas.
